Yes. The free version includes 3 playlists, all game modes, and multiplayer — no time limits, no ads, forever. With WhatTheHit+ you get more playlists and seasonal specials.
Currently WhatTheHit is only available for iPhone and iPad. An Android version is unfortunately not planned at this time.
In Party mode, up to 10 players can play on a single device. Via multiplayer, additional players can join with their own iPhone — with no fixed limit. In Race mode, everyone plays on their own device by default.
Yes. An internet connection is required for song and year recognition via Shazam, as well as for playing songs from playlists. Song recognition itself works offline, but determining the release year requires a connection. Due to licensing restrictions, songs also cannot be stored locally.
Each playlist covers as wide a time range as possible — matching its theme. The Gen Z playlist, for example, contains songs from 2000 onwards, while Rock Classics or Schlager reach back to the 60s. New playlists are added regularly.
No! Multiplayer works completely free — the Game Master (host) can also play with the free version. WhatTheHit+ gives the host access to more playlists, but players who join on their own iPhone never need a subscription. They always play for free.
WhatTheHit is a music quiz where you guess the release year of a song. This requires a certain level of music knowledge that younger children may not have yet. There are currently no playlists specifically curated for kids.
